The hospital was New Zealand's first hospital built exclusively for children and young people and their health needs. Starship was opened on 18 November 1991. The name was chosen because of the design of the building and in the hope that children and young people would think of it as a less frightening place to go. Starship's prime focus is on delivering family-centred care in a child friendly environment.
Starship was designed to appeal to children and young people. It is built around a central atrium with a rainforest theme, a playground and natural light.
